Sprinter Van on dirt road by lake

It's no secret to Irvine drivers that the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van is one of the most durable vans on the market with an enhanced driving system that allows it to be driven on any kind of terrain. The Mercedes-Benz 4x4 Sprinter Van system was a notable trait of this van for a long time. The most recent Sprinter Van model has switched to the All Wheel Drive system that's even more powerful than the previous 4x4 system while also being more efficient.

Fletcher Jones Van Center goes into depth about the previous Mercedes-Benz 4x4 system compared to the new and improved All Wheel Drive system. Then, we invite you to visit our dealership and experience the power of the Sprinter Van for yourself with a test drive.

What is a 4x4 Sprinter Van?

In previous years, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans had a 4x4 powertrain system. This system functioned very similarly to standard 4x4 powertrain systems, dividing torque levels to the front and rear differentials. Recently, Mercedes-Benz has opted to equip the Sprinter Van with a unique All Wheel Drive system. Costa Mesa drivers can still drive 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Vans, but for now, they'll have to shop through our pre-owned inventory to drive a 4x4 model.

4x4 vs. AWD: What’s the Difference?

What's the difference between a 4x4 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van and a Sprinter Van equipped with the All Wheel Drive system? A 4x4 powertrain system links the front axle and rear axle together and evenly distributes power and torque between the two axles. Distributing power levels evenly between two axles allows them to spin at the same speeds, which makes a 4x4 powertrain system optimal for driving on rougher terrains outside of Huntington Beach. You can usually switch between equally divided power or just driving on two wheels.

All-wheel drive also connects the front and rear axles, but this type of powertrain usually equips sensors to monitor the conditions of the Laguna Beach roads and adjust power levels accordingly. The biggest difference between 4x4 and all-wheel drive is that all-wheel drive automatically adjusts power, whereas 4x4 usually requires a manual switch.

4WD vs. 4x4 vs. AWD: How Does the Sprinter All Wheel Drive System Work?

Four-wheel drive and 4x4 are the same system. So, they both have the exact same function, and it just depends on the names people use to describe the system. How does the Sprinter All Wheel Drive system work? The Sprinter All Wheel Drive system functions like a standard all-wheel drive system, but this system has torque on-demand. Torque on-demand allows power to be split up to 50% between both axles. There's also an electric multi-plate clutch, which means no more manual switching like the old 4x4 system required. Rear-wheel drive occurs until changing torque levels require the all-wheel drive system to be activated.

The new Sprinter All Wheel Drive system allows you to drive around Orange County and have absolute control without having to manually make any changes. This provides additional peace of mind wherever you go.
