Sprinter Dashboard Warning Lights Explained

A triangle with an exclamation point on your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van dashboard is a common signal that you’ll see as you drive around Costa Mesa. Some signs indicate that immediate service is needed while others simply indicate that you

Hazard Warning Light

  • Icon: Triangle with an exclamation point in the middle.
  • Meaning: This is a general warning light that accompanies other warning lights, namely the ESP® and ASR® lights. If you see a triangle with an exclamation point on your Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van, you’ll want to visit your nearest Huntington Beach-area service center.

Coolant Temperature Light

  • Icon: Two red wavy lines with a temperature gauge in the middle
  • Meaning: Either the temperature gauge itself needs an inspection, or the coolant temperature is too high.

Coolant Level Light

  • Icon: Fluid reservoir with wavy fluid lines at the bottom
  • Meaning: The coolant volume is low, putting you at risk of overheating on the road in Laguna Beach. Pull over as soon as you can, allow the engine to cool, and add more coolant.

Airbag Light

  • Icon: A seated figure with a deployed airbag
  • Meaning: The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is malfunctioning. In the event of a collision, there’s a risk that the airbag wouldn’t deploy, so you should schedule service without delay when you see this light.

Brake Light

  • Icon: “BRAKE” accompanied by a circle with an exclamation mark and parentheses
  • Meaning: You either have low brake fluid, a faulty Electronic Brake Force Distribution, or a faulty trailer brake force booster.

Check Engine Light

  • Icon: Engine
  • Meaning: This may indicate an issue with the engine, fuel injection systems, exhaust, ignition, or high emissions.

Oil Level Light

  • Icon: Oil can
  • Meaning: There is an improper oil level, display malfunction, or faulty oil level sensor.

Glow Plug Light

  • Icon: Yellow coil
  • Meaning: The glow plugs are in the process of heating the engine’s cylinders. Seek service if the light doesn’t turn off after one minute.

Tire Pressure Light

  • Icon: Flat tire with an exclamation mark
  • Meaning: The pressure in one or more of your tires is dropping.

ABS Warning Light

  • Icon: “ABS” in a circle with parentheses
  • Meaning: This means that the Anti-Lock Brake System is deactivated, including the ESP®, BAS®, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and Hill-Start Assist. The system won’t respond to emergency braking, but you can still slow down and stop your vehicle.

Diesel Engine Fuel (DEF) Light

  • Icon: A puff of air with two fluid droplets on top of a wavy line
  • Meaning: If accompanied by the Check Engine Light, there may be a problem with the exhaust gas after-treatment system. On its own, the DEF light may indicate low DEF supply, contaminated DEF, or thinning DEF.

Brake Pad Linings Light

  • Icon: Circle with two curved dotted lines on the outside
  • Meaning: Warns the driver when the brake pads/lining have reached their limit. Replace the Sprinter brake pads as soon as possible.

ASR®/BAS® Light

  • Icon: Rolling tire with a vertical arrow
  • Meaning: When the light stays solid, the Acceleration Skid Control (ASR®) feature is disabled due to a malfunction. When the light is flashing, one or more tires have maximized their grip.

ESC or ESP® Light

  • Icon: A vehicle with two wavy skid marks behind it
  • Meaning: When you see this light, the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), formerly known as Electronic Stability Program (ESP®), is deactivated. If your vehicle loses control when this light is on, ESC will not mitigate.

Contaminated Air Filter Light

  • Icon: Dots surrounded by two solid lines on the outside and two crossed downward arrows in the middle
  • Meaning: The air filter is clogged and needs to be replaced as soon as possible.

Water in Fuel Light

  • Icon: Fuel pump with water drop next to it
  • Meaning: The water separator in the fuel filter has collected the maximum amount of water and must be drained.

Low Battery Light

  • Icon: Battery with “–” and “+” symbols
  • Meaning: The Sprinter battery isn’t charging correctly. This problem could be the result of a malfunctioning alternator, poly-v belt, or a problem with the electrical system.

Bulb Warning Light

  • Icon: Light bulb with an exclamation point on your dashboard
  • Meaning: One of the exterior bulbs is burnt out and must be replaced.
