What is a Smog Check?
If you recently moved to Huntington Beach from a state that didn’t require smog checks, you might be wondering what “smog check” means. Also referred to as a smog test or emissions test, a smog check is a test that measures the level of pollution your vehicle’s tailpipe emits. There is a legal limit your vehicle must meet. If your Sprinter or Metris Van fails a smog check near Laguna Beach, you will need to visit a service center for repair, then get the smog check again.
California Smog Check Regulations
In California, smog checks are required every other year. However, if you’re driving a newer gas-powered Sprinter or Metris Van in Orange County, you might not have to worry about the biennial smog check just yet. According to the California DMV, any gas-powered vehicle that is over eight model years old is required to get a smog check every other year.
If you purchase a used gas-powered vehicle that is over four model years old, a smog test will be required to transfer the ownership and register it under your name. After the initial registration, the rule of eight model years or older takes effect.
Smog Checks for Diesel Vans
If your Metris or Sprinter Van runs on diesel power, the smog check rules are different for you. According to the California DMV, any diesel-powered vehicle that is a 1997 model year or newer must get a smog check every other year.
